War itself is and has ever been barbaric, a recourse resorted to by (in)human beings when all else has - or rather appears to have - failed. Whatever apparently Scriptural basis of legitimacy people have cited in its behalf. As some have so rightly suggested, whatever God is said to allow is often depicted as if it were His own intention; which it often isn't.

Anyhow, though most people (in their moments of utmost dispassionateness) will defend to the rafters those who (happen to) kill/take (human) life - in defence of their own (life/lives) or that of their family, tribe or people - anytime one crosses that invisible line and begins to take innocent ('civilian') life they have thereby forfeited not only any legitimate human sympathy/understanding but much more importantly God's approval - which is the one, when all is said and done, that ultimately really, truly matters...
